MLB Preview: San Francisco Giants at Colorado Rockies

As the baseball season draws to an end most of the division races are all but over, however this is not the case for the NL West, which is the most compelling division race left in baseball. Currently the San Francisco Giants lead the San Diego Padres by .5 a game and the Colorado Rockies by 2.5 games.

Both the Giants and Rockies have done a remarkable job getting themselves back into the division race. Just one month ago the Padres held a 6 game lead over the Giants and an 11 game lead over the Rockies. The fact that both teams have a legitimate shot at the division crown is pretty amazing.

This weekend’s series will go a long way in determining who will win the NL West. The Giants will be looking to continue their hot streak and distance themselves from the other hottest team in baseball. If the Rockies hope to win the division they are going to have to overtake the Giants this weekend and finish on a high note when they play San Diego to finish the season.

The pitching match up for this weekend’s 3 game series clearly favors the San Francisco Giants as their three best pitchers will take the mound, while Colorado does not get a performance from their ace Ubaldo Jimenez. The match ups for this weekend are as follows:

Friday – Lincecum vs Chacin
Saturday – Zito vs Hammel
Sunday – Cain vs De La Rossa

While it is difficult to predict who will win this series between the two closely matched teams, one things is for sure we will have a much better idea of who will emerge from the highly competitive NL West after this weekend.

MLB: History of Cleveland Indians

The Cleveland Indians have a rich history that goes all the way back to 1901. Of the American League, they currently play within the Central Division. In the Central Division, the Indians have been a dominant force since it was formed in 1994.

The team in their history has won two World Series titles and both of those titles came long before the 1990’s.

In 1920 came the first World Series Championship for the Indians. In the team’s history, this would be the first time that they won the World Series.

The New York Yankees were the one team dominated the 1920. Indians found themselves in the World Series again, until 1948.

Negro League legend Satchel Paige was signed by the Indians in 1948. Despite his age he was able to put together a solid ERA and record to help the Indians on their way

In the World Series, the Indians would take on the Boston Braves. For the Indians, this would be the 2nd and last World Series title.

The team went on to win the Division title every year between 1995 and 1999, after the Central Division was created in 1994. During that stretch, the team was led by big time players like Albert Belle, Kenny Lofton, Roberto Alomar, Manny Ramirez, Jose Mesa, and Omar Vizquel and it was able to reach the World Series twice.

In the recent years, the Indians have been a contender, but the team has not been able to find the same sort of consistency that they had in the 1990s.

Atlanta Braves vs. Florida Marlins (7:05 pm ET, MLBN)

Atlanta Braves and Florida Marlins duel it out on Friday (7:05 pm ET, MLBN), at Sun Life Stadium, Miami.

Against an ascending young pitcher, a grizzled thirty-something will still face off when the Marlins face the Braves on Friday, although they’re not the two pitchers who were originally scheduled to start.

In the opener of a three-game series in Miami, Atlanta will send Kenshin Kawakami to the hill against Florida’s Andrew Miller. Between Braves right-hander Derek Lowe and Marlins righty Ricky Nolasco, the game had been scheduled to be a showdown, but because of injuries, both were shut down.

Lowe in his pitching elbow for the better part of six weeks has been battling discomfort, and on Sunday, he received a cortisone injection when he felt a numbing sensation in his right hand after throwing three innings against the Marlins. In a few days, he hopes to resume pitching.

Lowe said, “I didn’t think I was going to miss a start, so I can’t say it’s going to feel better in three days, a week or whenever. It’s unfortunate. It’s [my] turn to pitch, and I’ve never missed [a start]. But you’ve got to be honest with yourself and true to your team.”

Since July 16, enter Kawakami, who hasn’t pitched in the Majors. He was being used in a relief role. With Triple-A Gwinnett, he made five starts, as he was being prepped for this outing, in 21 innings, posting a 4.29 ERA and 22 strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Nolasco will undergo surgery next week and is finished for the season and he has a torn medial meniscus in his right knee.

On Monday, Miller last pitched out of the bullpen, when he allowed a hit and a run in an inning of work. With Double-A Jacksonville, he has spent most of the season, where he’s battled command problems while posting a 6.01 ERA in 18 starts. He’s walked 61 batters and fanned 66, in 85 1/3 innings. In 73 appearances, he has made 48 career starts, with a 14-21 record and a 5.47 ERA.
