New York Yankees visit Northwest with series against Seattle Mariners

New York YankeesThe New York Yankees will take on the Seattle Mariners this weekend. These teams are both in contention for their respective divisions this season and this series will be very important for both teams as they continue to compete.

MLB Odds have the Yankees among the top favorites to win the World Series, at 5-1. Seattle is at 125-1.

The Mariners are the 3rd place team in the NL West, but they are just 1.5 games behind the leading Texas Rangers. The Mariners looked like they were on their way towards a last place finish, but they have now won 6 games in a row and they look like a team that could compete in the NL West.

The good news for the Mariners is that they will send Pineda and Hernandez to the mound in this series. Both of these pitchers have been on as of late and they are a major reason for the recent success of the Mariners. If they put up good games in this series, the Yankees will have a difficult time beating Seattle.

The Yankees were counted as dead by many teams, but they have found their way back into the first place position in the AL East. While they are in first place again, it is not encouraging that they are only in first place because Tampa Bay has played terribly as of late. The Red Sox and Blue Jays are in hot pursuit and the Yankees need to win this series to stave them off.

The Yankees will send AJ Burnett, Ivan Nova and Bartolo Colon to the mound in this series.

Friday Clash Between New York Mets And New York Yankees

New York MetsIn interleague play in the famous “subway series,” the New York Mets and the New York Yankees will play against each other. As the fans from each team will be present to cheer on their team, these teams should draw a huge crowd at Yankee Stadium. The series will start on Friday and will last 3 games.

Although you certainly can’t count out the Mets in this one, the Yankees will be the favorites in this game, as they have the better record and they are the home team. The Mets look like they are on their way up, getting fuel from their rejuvenated lineup as they are 7-3 in their last 10 games.

By losing their last 5 games and winning just 3 of their last 10 games, the Yankees seem to be on the way down. In the American League East Standings, they were passed by the Tampa Bay Rays this past week.

Recently, the Mets have seen more production from Jason Bay and Carlos Beltran. Despite suffering from a poor start to the season, big seasons from both of those players could help them find their way back to the playoffs.

From longtime players the Yankees have recently been troubled with drama. Jorge Posada was moved to the 9th spot in the order as he has struggled all season. Because he did not want to bat 9th in the lineup, he recently made some complaints and refused to play in a game. It could be a distraction for the Yankees until they take care of the problem as this has caused a stir in the organization. For this matchup, check out MLB odds closer to the opener Friday.

New York Yankees, Texas Rangers open series Friday

New York YankeesThe New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers will play this weekend in a series between two of the top teams in the American League. Each of these teams are in first place in their respective divisions. The series is scheduled to start on Friday night in Texas.

MLB Betting has the Yankees at 5-1 to win the World Series and the Rangers at 20-1.

The Rangers will be the home team in this game and that should be a huge advantage for them. They are 16-13 on the season overall, but their home record has been outstanding at 11-5. The Yankees have not played many road games this season, and they are 5-3 to this point away from New York.

The Rangers started out on fire, but they have struggled a bit as of late. Luckily the Los Angeles Angels have been struggling as of late as well. Both teams have gone 4-6, so the Rangers have managed to stay atop the American League West despite their struggles.

With Josh Hamilton injured, the Rangers will need Adrian Beltre to step up and play like a marquee player. Last season he was a major weapon for the Red Sox and he had a season with the Dodgers when he was one of the best hitters in the league. The Rangers need Beltre to step up and hit in this series as the Yankees are a great offensive team and should put a lot of runs on the board this weekend.

If the Rangers lose this series, they may get passed up by both the Los Angeles Angels and the Oakland Athletics.

On Friday – Andy Pettitte Officially Announce His Retirement

On Thursday with word that pitcher Andy Pettitte is calling it quits, the New York Yankees chances at winning the 2011 World Series took a hit.

According to baseball news, at a news conference at Yankee Stadium on Friday, Pettitte, the MLB all-time leader in playoff wins, is expected to officially announce his retirement.

Above all after the Yankees were disappointedly eliminated from the 2010 MLB Playoffs against the Texas Rangers, many saw this coming.

Compare to Pettitte who has 19, no pitcher in Major League Baseball history has more playoff wins. With 15 the next closest is John Smoltz, followed by Tom Glavine with 14 and Roger Clemens with 12.

Pettitte phoned Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner to tell him of his decision, ESPN reported Thursday.

Even though Pettitte only starting talking seriously about it last season, he will turn 39 on June 15 and has made hints about retiring for several seasons.

Pettitte would reconsider as spring training drew closer as he’s done in the past, what the Yankees seemed to be holding out hope. When the Yankees failed to sign Cliff Lee as a free agent this winter that hope became more urgent.

Cliff Lee Spurns Yanks, Rejoins Phillies With $120M Deal

This week free agent pitcher Cliff Lee rejoined the Philadelphia Phillies that he led to the 2009 World Series title with a guaranteed five-year $120 million contract.

The Phillies chances of winning the 2011 World Series in MLB Betting Odds will be increased with this move.

Last December 16th, the 32-year old lefthander was traded and then Seattle swapped him to the Texas Rangers this past July. Even though he became a free agent on November 1st, Lee helped the Rangers reach their first World Series.

What the New York Yankees would offer him most observers figured he couldn’t turn down that. Cliff Lee became a Phillies once more when on December 15th, a day shy of what would have been a year since they traded him.

Comparatively to the Phillies, the offer of Yankees and Rangers were reportedly significantly higher but Lee turned down offers from both of them. With the same length of Roy Halladay’s agreement from last year, the length of the contract was a departure from Philadelphia’s traditional policy of not offering contracts of longer than three years.

Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt will no doubt make Philadelphia prohibitive favorites in the National League East Division and Lee’s addition to the Phillies’ starting rotation of Halladay. The potential for an incredibly formidable pitching staff is undeniable with 13 All-Star appearances among them and a combined 481-275 won-loss record.

If Lee pitches 200 innings in 2014 or a total of 400 innings combined in the 2014 and 2015 seasons, his contract reportedly contains a $12.5 million buyout clause as well as a $27.5 million option that kicks in. The contract will pay him $135 million, if he remains with Philadelphia for six seasons.

New York Yankees, Texas Rangers throw more money at Cliff Lee

The New York Yankees have added a seventh year to their offer for pitcher Cliff Lee, according to ESPN the Magazine. The Yankees original offer to Lee was for six years and 140 million according to MLB news.

In another development, the Texas Rangers met with Lee face-to-face in Little Rock, Ark. The Texas brass presented Lee a variety of increases in salary. Rangers’ general managing partner Chuck Greenberg said the organization is committed to fielding a championship-caliber team.

Rangers President Nolan Ryan was told of the Yankees adding a year on ESPN’s “Mike and Mike in the Morning” show. He later remarked that tacking on a seventh year to the contract could be dangerous. However, Ryan didn’t say that seven years went beyond the Rangers limit.

Texas general manager Jon Daniels also declined to say whether the Rangers would adjust their offer. He did admit though that the team is “willing to take on a level of risk that we wouldn’t for another player,”.

At the winter meetings in Florida, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman confirmed that the team had made a formal offer to Lee, but wouldn’t reveal anything more about the Yankees plans.

New York manager Joe Giradi called Lee the “complete package” and is very hopeful that the Yankees will sign him.

Seattle Mariners Felix Hernandez wins AL Cy Young Award

Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez has won the 2010 AL Cy Young Award.

Hernandez boasted a MLB-leading 2.27 ERA and 232 strikeouts, although he had a so-so 13-12 record during the regular season. He beat out Tampa Bay Rays’ David Price and the New York Yankees‘ CC Sabathia, who had better win-loss numbers.

Hernandez’s overall record was the victim of the Mariners’ poor hitting all season, but is performance on the mound earned him the majority of votes from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

Hernandez got 21 of the 28 first-place votes and 167 points. Price had four first-place votes and had a total of 111 points while Sabathia got three top-spot ballots and a total of 102 points.

“This confirms the Cy Young is an award not only for the pitcher with the most wins but the most dominant,” a teary-eyed Hernandez said while celebrating with relatives at the family home in Valencia, Venezuela.

The 13 wins by Hernandez marked the fewest for a Cy Young starter in a full season — Tim Lincecum set the record last year with 15 victories for the San Francisco Giants.

Fernando Valenzuela won the NL award in strike-shortened 1981 after going 13-7. His mark of six games over .500 had been the lowest for any Cy starter until Hernandez.

MLB: History of Cleveland Indians

The Cleveland Indians have a rich history that goes all the way back to 1901. Of the American League, they currently play within the Central Division. In the Central Division, the Indians have been a dominant force since it was formed in 1994.

The team in their history has won two World Series titles and both of those titles came long before the 1990’s.

In 1920 came the first World Series Championship for the Indians. In the team’s history, this would be the first time that they won the World Series.

The New York Yankees were the one team dominated the 1920. Indians found themselves in the World Series again, until 1948.

Negro League legend Satchel Paige was signed by the Indians in 1948. Despite his age he was able to put together a solid ERA and record to help the Indians on their way

In the World Series, the Indians would take on the Boston Braves. For the Indians, this would be the 2nd and last World Series title.

The team went on to win the Division title every year between 1995 and 1999, after the Central Division was created in 1994. During that stretch, the team was led by big time players like Albert Belle, Kenny Lofton, Roberto Alomar, Manny Ramirez, Jose Mesa, and Omar Vizquel and it was able to reach the World Series twice.

In the recent years, the Indians have been a contender, but the team has not been able to find the same sort of consistency that they had in the 1990s.

Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees – MLB – Preview

On Friday, Aug. 6, the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox look to renew their storied rivalry with a four-game series in the Bronx. As of late having fallen 7.5 games out of first place in the AL East, the Boston Red Sox are struggling. In Boston’s demise this year, injuries have played a large role with Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia, Victor Martinez and Mike Lowell all having spent time on the DL recently.

This week, Boston is hoping to get a few of these players back, when they play the reeling Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians, who are in last place in the AL Central. This is because, before facing the Yankees, they can make up a few games in the standings.

The games next weekend will feature some quality pitching match ups, as is it always seems when the Yankees and Red Sox square off. John Lackey, Jon Lester, Clay Bucholz and Josh Beckett are included as the scheduled starters for the Red Sox, while the Yankees will counter with C.C. Sabathia, Dustin Moseley, Javier Vazquez and A.J. Burnett.

The Yankees will be looking to improve upon their AL best 34-16 home record and lead the season series 5-3. This year, the Red Sox are a pedestrian 28-24 on the road, which would lead one to believe they will have their hands full next week against the Yanks. MLB game reports suggests that the Yankees will prevail in this encounter.
